What My ‘Take A Leap Of Faith’ Looks Like And Why You Should Consider One.

Most people would have heard the expression ‘take a leap of faith’ which according to the definition from idioms.thefreedictionary.com is:

‘An acceptance of or willingness to do something based largely or entirely on one’s faith that it is correct or will work, despite having little or no evidence or assurance thereof.’

We all deal with unknowns. Every day of our lives, we deal with unknowns. Before you start a new job, before you go on holiday, before you go to a new place, or before you jump into that car, plane, or train. We don’t always have certainty, but we are most certainly more comfortable in the familiar. It’s human nature.

Then there’s fear. It’s easy to let fear stop you from making a change, taking the next step or a big step. Things could go wrong, or they may not work out exactly as they should, and as you expected them to.

But what’s that got to do with the price of pretzels in Paris, you ask? 🙂

I have taken lots of leaps in life, and faith is certainly a huge part of those leaps. One of the biggest leaps I took earlier in life was just after I finished high school. My parents sent me off by myself to Switzerland from Kenya to study. I had never left the country until then! I had always travelled in-country with my parents and didn’t have a huge amount of independence really.

But hey, if I thought I was taking a leap of faith, I can only imagine what was going through my parents’ minds as they sent me off to a whole other country alone for the first time and unaccompanied by either of them. Yikes!

Side note: I now have 3 young kids and I have already told my husband that we have to get an apartment opposite my kids’ university so that I can be close to them if they need me lol! It’s not easy to let go, so much respect for my folks for doing so with me, their oldest daughter.

Anyway, I’ve moved countries a fair bit since then, for studies, work, or travel but it doesn’t make it any easier. As I’m about to take another huge leap and move to a major unknown, Saudi Arabia, I thought I’d share my insights, family experiences, personal essays, travel adventures, funny stories, and life inspirations with you on this blog.

Along the way, I hope to inspire you, to help you see what’s possible for you if you took a leap or multiple leaps of faith for what you want to do with your life, where you want to go and why now is the best time. That’s my view.

Taking a leap of faith and letting yourself experience the unknown can be very rewarding! I can attest to that, multiple times. It’s not all rosy but it can be memorable.

The thing is, when we moved to Adelaide in 2017, we did not know anyone. Neither my husband nor I had a job that would give us a semblance of ‘security’. We had managed to secure a rental, but it was out of our financial comfort zone because we couldn’t get anywhere else.

We did not know if the kids would adjust well, nor would we have the support of our extended family if they did not. We had to build a community around us from scratch, amongst many other firsts.

However, the experience has been extremely rewarding and enriching! The quality of life we enjoyed and continue to enjoy in Adelaide is incomparable to our expectations. If we had let our fears, others’ opinions or societal expectations prevent us from making the leap in 2017, we would have missed out on some of the best years of our lives!

Conclusion

So often, lots of us choose to settle for what’s safer and what’s more comfortable. We let life happen to us rather than creating the life that we really want for themselves. We paralyze ourselves in ‘safe places’, living according to other people’s opinions and parking our dreams in the process.

I hope this blog will help you aspire to achieve your goals, dreams, and ambitions through my humble journey or through a story I share. If nothing else, I hope to share a few laughs with you from my experiences and those of my family along the way while you’re here.

Do leave me a comment below and share with me your goal, dream or ambition that you would like to realize in 2022 and beyond. Love to hear from you! Thanks for reading.
